The USS Verity (NCC-97000) was a Federation starship operated by Starfleet in the late 24th century.

Service history

In 2381, the Verity was assigned the massive humanitarian mission of evacuating as many beings as possible from the portions of the Romulan Star Empire that were predicted to be in the blast area from the Hobus supernova. Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, formerly of the USS Enterprise-E, assumed command for the mission with Lieutenant Commander Raffi Musiker, Starfleet's foremost analyst on Romulan affairs. Over the next four years, the Verity evacuated thousands from the various Romulan worlds under threat, with Picard and his crew having to maintain the balance of the humanitarian mission and observing the Romulan Senate's calls for secrecy by not allowing them to perform sensor scans of their worlds or full access to their facilities. Yuyat Beta

In 2385, the Verity was ordered to evacuate the Romulan colony on Yuyat Beta, a previously unknown facility near the Romulan Neutral Zone. Arriving at Yuyat Beta, Picard and Musiker were asked down to the planet's surface to meet with Governor Shiana and Domus Athus alone. Picard quickly learned that rather than just having to evacuate the ten thousand colonists that were reported, he potentially had to evacuate the four-to-five million natural inhabitants of the planet.

The Romulans viewed the inhabitants as a primitive race that were not worthy of evacuation, which mortified Picard as it went against the very intent of the humanitarian mission and against the values of the Federation itself. When he refused to just evacuate the Romulans inhabiting the planet, Governor Shiana had Picard and Musiker arrested. (PIC: "Picard - Countdown, Issue 1")
